Grimlock is reborn in the Alternators line and even if he's no longer a Dinobot he still shows his classic G1 image as the bad ass Grimlock. A risky choice by Hasbro and Takara to bring back Grimlock as a Ford Mustang considering in the G1 line he was a robotic T-Rex but somehow Hasbro and Takara have managed to pull it off and bring back a fan favorite as a car and still manage to keep his G1 appearance.

Best part about this figure has to be the robot mode because its surprising just how G1 looking Grimlock still manages to be even if he's now a Ford Mustang. The face is extremely G1 looking and you can definitely tell that the character is Grimlock. The other thing that Hasbro and Takara seem to have done is make the legs almost like the G1 characters to! Grimlock is the first Alternator that uses the car seats as the robot modes feet and the new design change transformation for the legs has worked perfectly because even when transforming Grimlock it reminds fans of how G1 Grimlock transforms. The legs work beautifully and seem very G1 like in style and another great feature is the fact of Grimlock's chest area also seems to have a very G1 feel to it as it keeps the original looking appearance of the classic toy.

The arms for Grimlock have to be the most flexible so far on any Alternator because Grimlock can actually touch his chest area while all the other Alternators cant which seems to give of the impression of short arms or a fat chest. Grimlock however can touch his chest area with ease and bend his arms in almost any position.

Downside to Alternator Grimlock is his transformation itself, while some fans may be happy that he's extremely difficult to transform from vehicle to robot and back again, other fans may find themselves close to actually throwing Grimlock against a brick wall in anger! this figure is the most complicated Alternator made to date and can become very frustrating while trying to transform. Obvious problems that seem to happen are Grimlock's arms popping out of there sockets, legs popping out of the sockets, bonnet not going down and sliding into place, waist area difficult to twist as you have to twist the top and lower sections for robot mode, the damn head not going up the hole in the bonnet area and finally the lower area piece of the car has a tendency to constantly pop off the connection piece.

Vehicle mode for Grimlock is meant to represent power as that's what Grimlock was always known for but while the Mustang is a great choice of car to pick for Grimlock your just given a very plain impression of the vehicle and it doesn't look to different from Alternator Bluestreak/Silverstreak's color design. The look and choice of the car is perfect for Grimlock and this really stands out in robot mode but in vehicle mode it just makes the car seem very plain in design.

The bonnet of the car is an absolute pain in the arse to fold down correctly because of the engine and this can become rather frustrating at times. The wheels are rubber and have 'Cybertronian' written on them but sadly Grimlock doesn't have suspension like Hound or Prime. The trunk of the Mustang also opens up like the rest of the previous Alternators so far but much like the others this feature just seems to be an added extra and does not seem to have much of a purpose.

The packaging for this character followed the new Alternators design packing of red and with the 'Grid' type design effect giving the impression of the old G1 style packaging. The cartoon image on the front shows Grimlock waving his twin blaster gun and his infamous sword. The back of the packaging shows images of Grimlock in both vehicle and robot mode showing all the hidden extra's such as the engine/gun and the hidden sword. Nice packaging but would have been better is Hasbro kept the original Alternators design.

A great figure that's made the Alternators line and still kept his bad ass image of the G1 era. Grimlock may not be a Dinobot anymore but once transformed into robot mode he still give the image of the Grimlock we all know and love. A true bad ass to the Alternators line and a fantastic rebirth of one of the great G1 Transformers
